The Ghost Squadron Aircraft Team was formed in 1980 to promote the public awareness of large scale model aircraft, and to demonstrate these models to both fellow modellers and the general public. Since 1980 the Ghost Squadron has varied in complement depending on the types of models being operated and the team has, at times had up to 8 members. Currently the team consists of two of the three original members and 4 others, profiles of the current tram pilots can be found below. Close associates are also invited to take part in some of the demonstrations and displays that the Ghost Squadron carry out.
The range of activities that the Ghost Squadron carries out has also diversified over the years to cover:
The organisation of flying shows from small village fetes to major international air shows.
Giving talks to aviation minded groups such as the A.T.C
Presentations to full size and model flying clubs.
Public demonstrations of model flying in the UK and other European countries.
Flying of models for film and TV.
The demonstration of model aircraft by the Ghost Squadron can take many forms, we always try to tailor the display to suit the occasion. This may involve flying very basic training models suitable for learning to fly, or at the other end of the scale, very large and spectacular models designed to impress the crowd’s at large international events.
Many different types of model aircraft are flown by the team, from all avenues of model flying, these include:
Small glow fuel engined aircraft
Large gliders ranging from modern all moulded types through to Vintage models
Large scale aircraft with petrol engines Pulse jets
Gas turbine powered jets Free flight aircraft Control line aircraft
Helicopters
Electric powered models
The team members normally build all the models that the team operates individually but with other team members helping out with specific tasks as required. A key strength in the team is that individual team member skills are utilised to best effect in all projects. Many of the models built by the team are unique, in that they have been planned and designed and built by team members
We are possibly the longest continuously operating Model Aircraft Team in the world and still have some of the original founding members. If anybody knows of a longer continuous operating model aircraft team please let us know
